What Is A Bengal Cat, And What Breed Of Cat Are They?

The Bengal cat is a domestic long-haired cat breed. They are considered to be one of the oldest types of domesticated cats and are thought to have originated in Southeast Asia. The Bengal has a distinctive spotted pattern on its coat that can vary in color from light tan to dark brown, with darker bands running down their back and tails. Bengal Cat History

The Bengal cat is a breed of domestic cat that originated in the Bengal region of present-day India. The original Bengals were probably Siamese cats crossed with British Shorthair cats, though some believe that the Bengals are actually a result of Turkish Angora cats interbreeding with European Short-Haired Cat breeds. The Bengal was first exhibited at the 1871 Crystal Palace Show in London and gained international recognition as a show cat. However, it was not until the 1930s that breeding programs began to focus on obtaining Bengals with unusual markings and coat colors (known as “pointing”), which led to the development of distinct subtypes or “breeds” of Bengals. Today, there are approximately two hundred registered Bengals worldwide.

Bengal Cats as Pets

The Bengal cat is a cross between the common housecat and the Asian leopard cat. These cats are often referred to as “tuxedo cats” because of their coat pattern, which consists of a checkerboard of black and white squares on a tan or light brown background. Bengals are considered to be one of the most intelligent breeds of felines, and they make great pets thanks to their playful personalities and spectacular feline agility.
